Identity: What's on the Far Side of Your Moon?

How do you define yourself? By your career? Your relationships? Your past? Your potential?

For a moment, let's look beyond whatever title is listed next to our names on the company website or on our business cards.

Who are you, really? When you're by yourself, what kinds of words do you use when you speak to yourself? Are you kind or not-so-kind? Do you encourage yourself or nag yourself?

As with all of us, there's a side of us that most people don't know about -- just like the moon. From Earth, we see the same side of the moon every night, no matter which phase it's in and no matter where we are standing. You may have heard of the phrase "the dark side of the moon."

You may have never told anyone about your dreams and hopes for the future. Maybe you think people would laugh at them or tell you that they're too impossible to come true.

Like each of us, you probably have shortcomings and struggles you never discuss. You may even let the dark, unknown side of your own moon (moon = your life) -- past failures, those struggles and flaws, lack, and other factors -- have way too much weight in your life.

The great news is that there is no constant, set dark side of the moon.

Though we can't see the entire moon when we look at it, the side we don't see never stays in darkness. Light does reach to the other side (McFall-Johnsen, 2019).

There may be times when you think who you are, all that's good about you, and your potential will always stay dormant, underutilized, unseen, and unknown -- in the dark.

It's not true.

At the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, there is a Saturn V rocket which stretches toward the sky. It's wonderful, but it is only a replica. The real and valuable Saturn V is indoors, kept safe from the outdoor elements.

Maybe parts of what makes you -- you, and what makes you infinitely amazing is hidden away inside like the real Saturn V.

We are not the dark side of our moon, we aren't even the moving shadows. Within you is the real and valuable you. It goes beyond a title, beyond your past, beyond your mistakes, and beyond whomever says the words, "You'll never make it, you'll never rise above this."

Who are you? And what are you going to do with the "who" that you are right now?
